According to researchers at MIT by using the polarization of light for 3-D imaging devices may improve their imaging resolution as much as 1000x! As stated in the article "System boosts resolution of commercial depth sensors 1,000-fold" in Science Daily, by exploiting the polarization of light conventional 3-D devices can create a better more realistic image. This is easily identified in the image below. Using the polarization of light to benefit society is not a new thing. This technology is currently being exploited through polarized sunglasses and 3-D movies already. The article also mentions that although people have known about the polarization of light for centuries until recent years it wasn't of much use to society because its of its ambiguous nature. For further information on this topic please refer to the website at the end. The world of 3-D technology has a growing consumer base. This cutting edge technology has the potential to assist in the creation of driver-less cars, replica production, and even adding it to cell phones. By adding the polarizing lens to a low-quality sensor in something such as a cell phone it can make the image appear in equal or greater depth than many machine shop laser scanners. This technology may lead us into an age where 3-D imaging is common and used in everyday life. Source: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/12/151201141244.htm
